The Eight Gates. These great pathways of power are located within eight specific points on a person's Chakra Pathway System inside their body. The user of these divine Gates learn to limit the overall flow of the chakra within their own body. The basis for the idea of the chakra gates comes from the body's limits on the many functions within it. This is like a dual-edge sword. While these gates makes the body much weaker, it makes up for this drawback by providing the type of energy that keeps the body from expiring too soon. By undergoing intense training, one can learn how to open these gates. This allows for the user of this amazing power to surpass their own physical limits at the cost of extreme damage to their own body.

Unfortunately, these Eight Gates are referred to by many as a Kinjutsu. Literally meaning "Forbidden Techniques". Kinjutsu are techniques that have been banned by the world of Shinobi from being taught or used. This ban could have been put in place for any number of reasons. Techniques that cause harm to the user themselves, such as opening the Eight Gates, are the first to be on the list of becoming banned. The reason for this is because the mere use of this technique is both highly useful as well as detrimental to the user. Despite being banned, the use of these techniques generally do not carry any legal consequences in respects to the village they're used in, except those brought on by the techniques themselves. However, their use is heavily frowned upon, especially those techniques that violate nature.

The state of having all Eight Gates open is known as "Eight Gates Released Formation". Any Shinobi who activates this state will temporarily gain powers greater than a Kage, but they will die because of the damage done to their body if they are to open all eight of these fantastic gates of energy. Due to the immense amount of chakra flooding the body all at once, drastic changes can occur upon the user's body. The most common of these changes are the darkening of the skin, eruption of veins around the temples, or even the eyes turning completely white (which would not be much of a change to those who possess the eyes of a Hyuuga).

The green aura surrounding the user could be easily mistaken as chakra. However, this misconception can easily be explained by stating that the green substance surrounding the user is his sweat evaporating at an extremely rapid rate, due to the intense rise in body temperature of the user who dared to open this extreme source of power.

This is the way the Eight Gates were described to the Rogue Shinobi, Hayato Hyuuga. During his days on the pirate ship sailing the Nami Ocean, Soran heard about these “Eight Gates of treasure” by one of the pirates on the crew. Soran was immediately intrigued by the topic when it was first brought up to him. The pirates seemed to misinterpret this rumor of the Eight Gates as a physical manifestation of treasure that would give those who found it great power. Soran listened carefully to this before actually piecing together the puzzle hidden within this riddle.

While on this ship soaring on the high sea, Soran began to examine his own chakra flow with his Byakugan. This allowed him to locate exactly where the location of his own Eight Gates were located. The first of these Eight Gates were located within the brain. This was the Gate of Opening. This gate removes the restraints of the brain on the muscles so 100% of their strength can be used whereas normally, a person can only use 20% of their muscles' strength to keep them from disintegrating. Soran unlocked this fairly easily. Before furthering his training to progress to the second Gate, he decided to test how it would actually affect him in a combat situation.

So Soran asked the captain of the ship to dock over in the corner of the bay where a large, rocky cliff was located. Soran ran off of the edge of the ship and grabbed the edge of the cliff with one arm while he placed the other behind his back. This was a training method taught to Soran whenever he had officially became a Genin. This was a training method which involves climbing a high or steep cliff using only one arm. It is meant to improve one's strength and discipline. The crew watched in astonishment as Soran began to climb using only one of his arms. Although, he quickly began to struggle. So the Rurouni Hyuuga activated the first of the Eight Gates, the gate of opening! This allowed him to finish the exercise fairly easily.

The second Gate Soran managed to unlock was located in the brain. This was the Gate of Healing. Using this particular Gate forcibly increases one's physical strength and temporarily re-energizes the body. Soran managed to unlock this one through sheer effort alone. This would be as far as his training went for now. He had heard that all the Gates beyond this held a great risk of permanent damage to the body. This was not something Soran was willing to risk in a training exercise. So he decided to take it easy by jumping off the ship and into the water. This training method would be used by Soran in order to gain better chakra control. To do this, the Rogue Shinobi made sure to focus in a minimal effort to be emitting a constant stream of chakra from the bottom of his feet and using the repellent force to walk across the water's surface. This technique was more difficult to master than the Tree Climbing Practice, because the amount of chakra that needs to be emitted changes constantly.

The pirates Soran and Hakai were currently training looked at the “blind” teenager walk across the water effortlessly. They demanded with excitement to be taught. Even the Captain of the ship demanded this knowledge. So Soran took it upon himself to delay his Gates training in order to train these pirates the knowledge that ninjas possessed.

This training was done in secrete. So Soran felt pretty safe among his crew while training to unlock these abilities. However, Soran soon realized he could not possibly be the only person to unlock these amazing abilities through unlocking these Gates. Before he could further his training on how to use it to a completely maximum extent, he would have to find a way to counter an attack from somebody else who was using the Eight Gates. In short, he had to develop a technique to defend himself against other Taijutsu masters who were experts in hand-to-hand combat.

So Soran began to train on the ship with his own clones. He made sure to evenly distribute his chakra among the clones in order to accurately detect where the Eight Gates were located in an opponent. This would make finding a way to counter such a technique that much easier to counter. Soran had a difficult time accomplishing this. It was hard to develop a way to counter these techniques. He would have to rely entirely on his Hyuuga heritage and Gentle Fist skills to find a way to close these particular chakra points.

However, after nearly a month of practicing this technique, it became painfully obvious what Soran was doing wrong. Soran found out he had to direct his Jyuuken through his opponent's body, seek out the gate, and then apply the pressure to close it. Soran finally figured out the secrete to counter the Eight Gates!
