Giriko figured he'd do his part in terms of community service on this fine evening, or he supposed it was evenings at this point, he'd been with this hunting for part for what seemed like decades, and it was only until just recently that he and the intrepid band had actually reached the general area for where the arena had once laid. They had set up camp a kilometer away, reports having been made that a whole host of wild beast and men had made the old ruin their home and they wanted as much rest as possible before attempting to fight their way through the aforementioned host of nasty. Giriko, however, was young, energetic, and bored, so for the time being he had decided that his time would be better suited dispatching any beasts or wild men in between them and the bad guy's camp. That was how they came upon this lovely little scene. Giriko was hanging down from a branch on a splendid tree, hooking his knees around the branch as he stared down his target. It was a grizzly thing, disheveled and matted fur that surrounded a body honed for killing. This was probably one of the creatures he had heard about and seeing that its maw was covered in blood, he assumed it safe to dispatch the wretched thing.

Giriko went through the motions in his head, factoring every different algorithm and equation. Bow pointed down, arrow resting on the shelf, pulled slowly back, arrow is nocked, holding the bowstring in its grip, c*** feather pointing away from the bow. Three fingers grip the end of the arrow, index finger resting on top while two more grip it from the bottom. The bow is then lifted and drawn, the boy’s body being perpendicular to the his target as his left arm reaches out toward the target, the bow in tow as his right hand pulls back the arrow, the bowstring straining as it comes to rest beside the boy’s right eye, his gaze fully focused down the sight. The fingers release and the arrow soars through the air, piercing the wind with a light whistling sound that mesmerized all around it. And with a final "thock" the arrow struck the creature in the neck, killing it instantly. A light exhale escaped Giriko as his day had only just begun.

An adventure. That’s what the mission description had promised. Exotic sites to be seen. Ruins to explore (and subsequently clear out). Possible danger around every corner.

So why was Taeyeon so. Incredibly. BORED? The youthful kunoichi has had her fair share of lackluster missions, of course. And ultimately, if it was in service to someone in need, the girl would gladly take most any job, no matter how trivial. But rare was the occasion when a scroll not-so-subtly hinted at the possibility of danger, only to end up completely devoid of even the remotest sense of peril. Was it really too much to ask for at least some excitement?

The place they were going to was apparently a ninja village. Or at least, it used to be. Decades ago, before the conflict that had nearly wiped out the entire shinobi population. A once thriving community, now forever lost as its empty shell lay hidden within the mountains. It was enough to fill Taeyeon to the brim with excitement when she had first accepted the mission to clear the area out for the upcoming exams. She had never been so far outside the city before! But even her childlike enthusiasm would find itself at the brink of total evaporation as the days dragged on.

Walking. Walking. Even more walking. Perhaps it was the isolated, lonely nature of Kitai City’s existence as the sole bastion of civilization for untold miles on end. Perhaps it was the lack of any meaningful destination to travel to. Or perhaps it was Taeyeon’s youth, incorrigibly thirsty for stimulation. Whatever the reason, the child was most certainly not used to such long, uneventful treks. The tediousness of the thus far uninspiring journey was not to be a burden carried alone, it would seem. A general malaise so tangible it could practically be touched permeated throughout the expeditionary party like some form of toxic mist, sapping the will of all that it touched, lasting for days on end as the group marched monotonously toward their goal.

When they had at last arrived, the group set up a base camp within close proximity to the lost village, now apparently shelter for all manner of foul things. Hoping that, at long last, her boredom may finally be relieved, Taeyeon rubbed the sleepiness from her eyes and started toward the target. It wasn’t long at all before she noticed the other shinobi up ahead of her position, hanging upside down from a tree. All this time, the girl had almost forgotten that there was even another ninja present! The “excitement” of the mission so far had since convinced her that they were all just a bunch of boring explorers. And to think, she could’ve struck up some form of conversation with this other ninja while they were traveling. Or maybe they could have sparred! Heck, even a game of “I spy with my little kunai” seemed like it would’ve been mildly less excruciating than that torturously dull excursion.

But it was too late for such retrospective wishing. At least now she (possibly) had someone interesting to talk to. And hey… maybe he was just as interested in checking out the apparent den of danger awaiting them ahead as she was. As she took a few steps toward him, she then noticed just why he was hanging from a tree. Rather than just being some weirdo, he was apparently stalking some sort of prey, as the bow and arrow in his grasp would suggest. Inquisitively, her eyes moved from the boy to some kind of creature in the distance. Whatever that… thing… was, it didn’t look too friendly. Not that it mattered much. A barely audible whizz and a thunk later, and it was lying dead as a doornail. Whoever this ninja was, he was a pretty good shot.

As Taeyeon observed the results of the boy’s work, sudden movement would catch her eye. It came from several yards behind the hunting shinobi. It was disturbingly silent in its movements, but the child caught more than enough of a glimpse to recognize a large, catlike creature making its way towards the tree.

Well, that’s no good.

As the lithe predator began to stealthily climb up the tree towards its unsuspecting victim, Taeyeon burst towards them in a swift dash. The creature was disconcertingly close to the shinobi, readying a graceful yet deadly paw. But right before it could strike…!

WHAM!!!

One fleeting moment was enough for Taeyeon to feel the cat’s neck snap as its head was forced violently to the side, the impact of the girl’s foot knocking the creature clear off the tree branch and onto the ground, a limp, motionless heap. The kunoichi landed on her feet a yard or so away, happy to see that her flying kick was a success. Turning to face the other ninja’s back, Taeyeon looked up towards him with a smile.

“Hiya!”

Giriko exhaled heavily as he saw the creature fall to the ground, a sense of contentment washing over him. He wasn't necessarily a fan of killing, it was pretty messy and just kind of grim, but there was something very cathartic about shooting a target cleanly, letting the sound of the arrow shredding through flesh just take him in was a wonderful sensation. With the persistent vibration of the bowstring by his ear and the life leaving the menacing creature below them, Giriko was overwhelmed by a wonderful sensation. It was a strange mix of grim satisfaction and adrenaline that rushed through his blood whenever he scored that first kill of the day. The sensation was what he assumed philosophers equated to a beautiful sunset or what a hooker referred to as a night without accruing a venereal disease. It was a sense of beauty, contentment, fulfillment, that can only be found from enjoying a beautiful morning, slaughtering dangerous creatures, or only having to shampoo downstairs eighty times instead of ninety. Giriko was starting to hook his bow over his shoulder once more when the deadly sound of something big, dark, and claw...y scratched it's way toward him.

Giriko's head spun toward the encroaching creature, his muscles tightening around the branch as he flexed his abdominal muscles, flinging his upper body forward and rotating him upward and in to the air as his feet twisted in to position, landing gracefully on the branch and facing his incoming enemy...or where his incoming enemy was. Giriko was relegated to blinking blankly at the spot where his bestial enemy was just resting and instead...witnessed a small girl. Giriko just stared blankly at her for a few seconds as his brain tried to process what had just happened. Was the girl what was there before? She was a little too young for him even if they were closer to the same size than he probably enjoyed admitting, damn you God, but he would have noticed a cute little girl and wouldn't have mistaken it for another of the creatures that roamed this place. Giriko's head slowly turned toward a recently opened spot in the foliage and spotted another creature strewn out along the ground and the world made a little more sense. He wasn't going crazy and the girl wasn't turning back and forth between monster and human and he wasn't hallucinating. All good signs that brought a small smile to his face. It was then that he recognized the girl, she had been traveling with the expedition he was with and while they hadn't spoken for the duration of their trip, he knew she was the other shinobi assigned to this little foray in to the wilderness. It had seemed both were to embroiled in their own personal fits of boredom to notice one another though, Giriko really would have enjoyed "I spy with my little kunai" especially if he got to hit something with one.

"Hiya backatcha, I didn't see that one. You saved me, thanks for that."

Giriko's eyes shifted away from the girl and in the direction they expected the arena to be and another small smile graced his face. That would be the most efficient way to deal with it. The people back at camp weren't, for the most part, fighters. They were laborers and scientists and event planners and while they had all decided for themselves that they would be part of the glorious recapturing of a monument to shinobi might...they didn't actually have any ability to do so and the last thing Giriko wanted to do was be stuck out here for any longer than he had to be. He had food at home calling his name. The boy, a devious smile on his face, turned back to the girl, insubordinate plans already rifling through his head.

"What do you say we get this done before the lazy good for nothings have a chance to realize we're here? Based on the spread of these creature's hunting grounds, I'd say they're giving a wide enough berth for humans, so the arena is probably an kilometer or two that way. Want to go clear it out while they're preparing their camping trip?"

“Don’t mention it,” the girl responded to the boy’s statement of gratitude. “Couldn’t just let you get eaten up, could I?” Her small, childlike grin grew slightly wider for a brief moment before returning to a more neutral appearance. Her eyes followed his as he began to layout his intentions. The boy was right. Judging from the position of the predators’ current hunting grounds, the arena’s position was more than likely straight ahead, no further than a kilometer or so away. A short enough distance for two ninja to traverse quickly, while far enough away that the less physically able would remain out of harm’s way for quite a while still. Though they probably didn’t have to worry about anyone following them. As the boy implied, the party seemed to be taking their time setting up camp. Judging by the speed of everything else they’ve done thus far, that alone could end up taking days. Busting up a group of barbarians would undoubtedly abbreviate the time left spent on this mission, and Taeyeon was all for it.

“Sounds like a plan!” The kunoichi turned her attention back towards the ninja. “By the way, my name’s Taeyeon. Nice to meetcha!” With a smile, the girl hopped up from her position and sped off towards their destination…

Upon reaching the former ninja village, Taeyeon couldn’t help but be amazed. Though it lacked the size and technological innovation that Kitai City now bore, for a village that had been veritably wiped out nearly a century ago, its walls stood the test of time. Were it not for the chilling lack of inhabitants roaming the streets, one would nary believe that the once proud Iwagakure was ever attacked at all. But the girl wasn’t here to take in the sights. She’d save that for the exams. For now, she had a mission to do. The city had an infestation, and she was the exterminator. It was nigh time to kick out the squatters, and so the girl dashed off toward the village arena.

Once there, the kunoichi gathered chakra at the bottom of her feet and dashed up the walls just on the outside of the arena. Climbing over the top, she jumped and landed onto a balcony overlooking the stadium below. As she waited for her ninja accomplice to catch up, she took the time to visually scout out the area. From her position, she could see several makeshift huts aligning the inner walls of the arena floor, just beneath the walls that separated the audience from the field. Near the center of the raised competition platform was a large campfire, around which she spotted her first barbarian quarry. She counted no less than eight or so around the fire itself, with more undoubtedly awaiting within the various huts. Were these trained shinobi, the girl may have been worried. But a bunch of uncultured brutes stood no chance against a pair of ninja. The girl smirked to herself. Time to get to work.

Seeing as a sneak attack wasn’t her style, the girl hopped off from the balcony, landing onto the arena platform, just about a dozen yards away from the barbarian powwow. She cleared her throat before raising and waving one hand towards the squatters.

“Hello, there! Not sure if you heard, but this space is being rented out. So you kinda need to go.” The barbarians stood up, clearly surprised at this sudden intrusion. Looking amongst each other, shock would quickly be replaced with anger. Grabbing their weapons, the savages cried out as they ran towards the unwelcome stranger. “Oh, and… that wasn’t a request!”

The barbarian to reach her first swung a huge club straight towards the child’s head. But he was far too slow. Ducking underneath the blow, Taeyeon dove between the man’s legs, tucking and rolling until she was behind him. She then flipped backwards, planting two feet against the back of his head before launching herself forward, the force sending the man face-first into the ground while simultaneously propelling her towards her next opponent. This one assumed that his airborne target would be helpless against a stab of his dagger. He was wrong. Altering her body ever so slightly, the girl shifted her shoulder back so that his blade went whizzing by. She then grabbed him by the wrist, letting her momentum drag the man’s arm down with her as she landed on the ground just beside him. It then took but a simple tug for her to pull his arm just past the point of the shoulder’s natural rotation, causing him to flip forward and be thrown onto his back, with his head near her foot. One kick later, and he was out like a light.

The next victim aimed a vertical slash of his sword toward the girl’s head, planning to go straight down and through her torso. With the grace of a dancer, the girl pivoted on one foot, letting the sword slash through the air beside her as she turned her spin into a spinning sweep underneath the attacker’s legs. As he began to fall backwards, the kunoichi used her incredible speed to flip forwards, a kick down into his gut sending him crashing into the floor. She then jumped up onto the shoulder of the next barbarian, her light frame balancing itself as she looked down at him with a smile. She lifted two fingers up in a peace-sign before spinning and sending her knee into his face. These brutes weren’t much of a challenge, but at least provided some entertainment. She hoped her shinobi friend was having as much fun as she was.

Landing noiselessly onto the ground, she eyed her next adversaries with a look of amusement. There were four left amongst this group, though she could hear the panicked footsteps of several more leaving their huts. She wasn’t surprised at all to find that most of these were heading in the opposite direction, towards the arena exit. Apparently they didn't feel like playing, and were in a hurry to escape with their lives. But considering one of their attackers was armed with a bow and killer aim, she didn’t really like their chances…

"I suppose eating is bad, I'm Giriko and the place is th...wait a tick Taeyon we should at least have semblance of a plan...son of a"

The girl had torn off through the jungle before Giriko really had a chance to formulate any kind of plan of attack or really even point out good entry points. A soft sigh escaped him as he watched her tear off through the foliage. There was a rather distinct difference between the two of them it would seem. The girl operated on emotion, impulse, and her own fanciful whims and that was a far cry from the logical, analytic and almost stoic tendencies of her newly found partner in crime. Saying that however, the exchange was almost relaxing. Giriko thoroughly enjoyed the girl's personality and her style of doing things was a refreshing contrast to his. Shaking his head in dismay, Giriko gently bent his knees against the branch before springing forward and through the trees, gracefully bouncing from limb to limb as he desperately tried to keep up with the tiny girl. He wasn't even close to her speed, a point that made him feel a little inadequate to be so vastly outclassed by a girl close to half his age, but he didn't really need to be. Based on her earlier movements he wasn't needed to be the front line in their little exchange. It was honestly a rare situation that Giriko would actually be allowed to utilize his strength. In almost every other altercation he had been in since getting out of the academy, he was forced to fight close range and had not been permitted, either by circumstances or his opponent's volition, to engage in a long range circumstance.

"She's...so reckless."

As he finally reached the arena, he noticed that his partner was already inside causing a ruckus. Even if half of the wall wasn't decayed and offering him a clear view of everyone inside, Giriko would be able to find everyone and paint an adequate picture in his mind simply based off the frenzied sounds of the panic she was causing. An exasperated sigh escaped him as he leveled his bow and set his sights on the main entry way to the arena, lining his sights down that runway. With the havoc she was going to cause, it was inevitable that the cowards and the ones incapable of fighting would flee from a shinobi, especially one that was a whirling maelstrom of limbs. They would inevitably flee and panic whenever something like that would suddenly befall them and their natural tendency would be to flee for the exit. Giriko braced the side of his back against the trunk of the tree, giving him room to reach back back for his shot as he lined the middle of his bow down the middle of the line.

"Same as always..."

Giriko went through the motions in his head once more, factoring every different algorithm and equation. Bow pointed down, arrow resting on the shelf, pulled slowly back, arrow is nocked, holding the bowstring in its grip, feather pointing away from the bow. Unlike the previous shot however, something had changed. Someone able to see chakra would notice the energy source surrounding and permeating the arrow and bow string, generating more and more tension and more and more potential energy in the arrow. The fingers release and the arrow soars through the air, piercing the wind with a light whistling sound that mesmerized all around it. Having timed it perfectly, as the bodies started filling in to the entry way, the arrow would fire with extreme speed and force through the area, the single arrow punching through skull after skull before flying further through the arena before violently crashing in to and lodging itself in to the wall. The boy's shot having outright obliterated seven people trying to escape through the walkway. Giriko hopped off the tree branch and slowly made his way toward the arena. No one else was going to be going through that walk way with a threat like that present so he was going to need to get in closer and start picking people off.

The sick slice of arrow meeting—and subsequently eviscerating—skull filled the air as Giriko’s presence was revealed to the unfortunate enemy forces. Taeyeon turned her violet eyes toward the sight, almost immediately regretting such a decision. Though she had long ago come to terms with the fact that death dealing was but a part of a ninja’s lifestyle, she had always preferred to make it as clean as possible. Such was the beauty of the art of Taijutsu; become proficient enough, and the line between lethal and non-lethal was always at your discretion. And should the mission necessitate the ending of a life (or several), there was no mess to clean up afterwards. Or at very least, the mess was far less sticky, and hopefully required little to no mopping up of any violently exhumed bodily fluids. It was a hunch, but something made Taeyeon believe the Queen didn’t want the site of the exams covered in liters of blood and splattered grey matter. Or at least not before the exams had started. Nevertheless, it was a nice shot. This guy would be great at parties.

The young girl waved playfully up towards her sharpshooting companion. “Hey! I hope you don’t expect me to clean that up! Do you have any idea how dirty their minds are?” It was a pedantic attempt at a joke, but what could really be said? She was a ten year old ninja, not a licensed comedian. With the kunoichi’s back turned and her attention diverted, the four remaining brutes had their courage renewed, rushing towards the child with their weapons at the ready. Unfortunately, a shinobi’s training adhered to the principles of stealth, both in its application as well as in its detection. And these raging barbarians with their plodding footsteps and undisciplined breathing were about as stealthy as a herd of rainbow colored elephants stampeding into an elementary school ballet recital. For a moment, she thought of humoring them. After all, if a group of adult men were so desperate as to attempt a sneak attack on a four foot tall little girl, they were in as much need of some personal encouragement as any. But she wasn’t there for charity, nor was she getting paid by the hour. So when the four men closed in, their hopes would be swiftly shattered as the girl spun around in a flash, swinging her feet in a lightning-quick motion as her body rotated a full three-hundred sixty degrees. Chakra infused in her legs accelerated the attack to impossible speeds, the additional power enough to send the would-be attackers flying.

As the four bodies crashed into four different spots of the opposite wall (two hitting weak enough portions of deteriorated stone to actually go straight through to the other side), the sound of heavy stomping called for the Chuunin’s attention. Rising to her feet, Taeyeon turned to see a large, giant of a man running towards her direction. The girl did what she could to not facepalm in resignation. A big guy. She should’ve known. There was always a big guy. Right at the end, too. The man must have been over seven feet tall, with arms the size of her entire body. An intimidating specimen, to be sure. Well… to non-ninja, anyway. With a sigh, the girl simply shook her head as he came within but a foot or so’s distance. Before the laughably huge behemoth could even begin to throw a ham-sized fist in her direction, she pushed off the ground in a sudden backflip, her foot rising and connecting square in the jaw of her target as her body twisted lithely backwards. Deceptively strong in spite of her size, the force took the giant off of his feet. In a blaze of speed, Taeyeon dashed directly behind and underneath his falling body with a shunshin. Though the next technique was normally aimed towards the chin, the girl lowered herself to establish a solid base before sending a powerful kick into his spine. The concussive force of the Shoufuu was enough to send the man flying high into the air. The apex of such a launch would have been more than enough to catch a certain arrow-slinging shinobi’s attention. While his earlier trick was certainly impressive, it was time to see how good his aim really was…

-----------------------------------------------------------
Standing up in a confident pose, her hands on her hips and her feet planted just past shoulder-width, Taeyeon’s face was decorated with an innocent smile as she surveyed her handiwork. Bodies were strewn all over the arena floor, many battered and beaten, others missing small but essential pieces of their heads (thanks a lot, Hawkeye). Those that weren’t dead were certainly in no condition to resist any longer. It would be easy enough for even weak –armed expeditionary explorers to coerce them into giving up whatever rights they thought they had to the former ninja village. With the area all but purged of any veritable threats, the band was free to get to work preparing the arena for its glorious new purpose. The Queen would be pleased.

As the non-shinobi got to work, Taeyeon looked toward Giriko. “Well, that was fun! Aside from all the walking, anyway. We should play again sometime!” The tiny kunoichi tilted her head, closing her eyes as an adorably childlike grin adorned her face. Soon enough, it would be time for their return to Kitai City. Another mission, complete!
